Texas Bow Fishing

Places for Bowfishing in Texas

There are many different rivers throughout the state that are excellent bow fishing locations. Just a few of the best rivers are Brazos, Trinity, Rio Grande, Neches, Angelina, Red, and Sabine. Some of the better lakes are Fork Lake, Palestine Lake, Lake of the Pines, Lone Star Lake, Sam Rayburn Lake, Martin Creek Lake, Bob Sandlin Lake, Livingston Lake, Lake Whitney and Toledo Blend.

Popular Texas Fish to Shoot

The most popular fish to hunt in Texas with a bow are Carp, Buffalo, Alligator Gar, Drum, Shad, Short Nose, Needlenose Gar, and Spotted Gar.

Texas Bow Fisherman’s Rights

There has been a proposal in Austin to ban bowfishing from a couple lakes in that area. Some also want to declare the Alligator Gar a game fish, which would in turn make bowfishing for alligator gar illegal. Please contact the appropriate governing authorities if you would like your voice to be heard on this issue.

Texas Bowfishing Guides

It’s not difficult to find a bowfishing guide in Texas, especially in the eastern and southeastern portions of the state. If you are going to look for a bow fishing guide online, keep a few things in mind. First of all, the fisherman might be very talented but poor with people skills. Second, look on the guide’s website for articles and tips. This is a good indication that the bow fisherman knows more than how to take people out on a boat. Third, always check the name of their Texas bow fishing guide company in Google or Yahoo. See if anyone has posted complaints against that company for poor service. Fourth, make sure that your bowfishing guide offers use of all the equipment you are not bringing with you (which in many cases will be all of it).
