Bow Fishing / Bowfishing for Gar

They say there is no experience like hanging on to a fish so big and powerful that it can pull a boat. The opportunities are all around you, and you don’t have to leave the U.S. Extreme bow fishing is all about the gar, carp, and buffalo. From $150 to $350 per day, you can have some good old Texas boys take you out in their boats and find some good fishing. You’ll have to have a state fishing license and provide your own meals most of the time, but equipment is generally provided if you don’t want to bring your own.

Gar Bow Fishing Tips

Use a guide when you’re getting started, and follow what he says. He’ll tip the odds in your favor. If you’re in a boat, have someone videotape your first few hunts so you can relive it with friends and show off your spoils! When you’ve got one on the line, stay aware of how much line is left. A gar can easily pull a man right out of the boat the line runs out.

Use the right equipment for the quarry. Ask a professional if you’re not absolutely sure. As mentioned before, the alligator gar has scales so thick that arrows sometimes bounce off! Look into using the right compound or recurve bow, and definitely the right tip. Don’t get too discouraged if your first few shots seem to hit then bounce. Even with the right equipment, you will need to learn proper shot placement. When the fish tires, use nooses to control small fish and gaff the larger fish. A noose cannot control a large fish.

Gator gar fishing is very different from carp or buffalo up north. Gar pop up out of the water like a gator or a porpoise and sink back below just as quickly. You have to be watching and ready. If the gar drops quickly, you have to assume where he’ll be and fire into the water. Experience is the best teacher.

Bow Fishing Boats

What kind of boat should you use for alligator gar hunting? We recommend boats that are roughly 20ft. long, 72” bottom, and 28” sides. Some of your extreme bow fishing guides have custom built boats approximately this size for stability.  When a giant fish is pulling your boat around like it’s nothin’, don’t you want to make sure you stay right-side up?

Gar Warning

Due to polychlorinated biphenyls, Chlordane, and DDE, the State of Texas warns against eating any species of gar caught  in the Trinity River between Texas 34 and Cedar Creek Reservoir discharge in Kaufman, Ellis, Henderson, and Navarro counties or ANY fish from Lake Worth in Tarrant County.
